Mastering the Concerto is a remarkable one-of-a-kind intensive course that pairs aspiring piano and violin soloists with conductors, providing both with incomparable opportunities to gain rare and vital experience with a professional orchestra while being mentored by master teachers in their chosen disciplines. The International Institute for Conductors will accept 10 conductors and 10 soloists for 12 days of study, instruction and performance with the Vidin State Philharmonic Orchestra in Vidin, Bulgaria from July 17 - 29, 2018.
Conductors will be mentored by renowned conducting pedagogue and creator of the Laban inspired Embodied Conducting™ method Charles Gambetta and Dr. Larry Spell, Music Director of the Wasatch Symphony (UT) and Assistant Conductor of the Salt Lake Symphony. Violinists will study with rising star Macedonian violin soloist Emilio Percan, and Italian virtuoso pianist Mattia Ometto will mentor piano students.
Participating conductors will study and conduct 2 complete concertos selected from the course repertoire. The conductor curriculum includes approximately 150 minutes of podium time with full orchestra and soloist, 60 additional minutes with string sextet and soloist plus 30 minutes of video review with faculty, score study and musicianship masterclasses and daily Embodied Conducting™ instruction.
Soloists and conductors will rehearse daily with full symphony orchestra plus evening sessions with string sextet. Soloists will receive 180 minutes of one-on-one coaching with Maestro Ometto or Prof. Percan, 2 studio masterclasses and a combined masterclass with conductors and soloists. All conductors and soloists will perform at least 1 movement from their course repertoire on 1 of 2 closing public concerts
